Mazda3 receives top international safety rating
The new-generation Mazda3, which was launched into the New Zealand market in April, has been awarded a maximum 5-Star rating by the European New Car Assessment Programme (Euro NCAP).
In 2009, Euro NCAP has implemented a more stringent evaluation system that awards a single overall vehicle safety rating combining scores achieved in four key areas: Adult Occupant Safety Performance, Child Protection Assessment Test, Pedestrian Protection Assessment Test and Safety Equipment.
“The rating given by the European New Car Assessment Programme means the Mazda3 is one of the safest cars available in today’s market,” said Andrew Clearwater, Managing Director, Mazda New Zealand.
“We place great emphasis on producing safe vehicles that are also stylish and fun to drive. This was demonstrated again earlier this year with the Mazda6 also receiving a 5-star rating from the new Euro NCAP evaluation system. The Mazda2 received the top 5 star rating under the previous rating system in late 2007,” said Clearwater.
The Mazda3 was also recognised as a 2009 Top Safety Pick from the US Insurance Institute for Highway Safety and has been named Canadian Car of the Year 2010 – Best New Small Car, the Malaysian CIMB Preferred & Getacar’s Best Junior Sports Saloon for 2009 and Scotland’s Best Family Car 2009.
Mazda was also recently awarded the 2009 Automotive Researchers’ and Journalists’ Conference of Japan (RJC) Technology of the Year award for its unique idling stop system – i-stop. The i-stop technology reduces fuel consumption by automatically shutting down the engine when the car stops in heavy traffic and instantly restarts the engine before the car moves again.
The Mazda3 has proven to be popular in New Zealand with local buyers and consistently features in the Top 10 selling models every month since its April launch.
Other Mazda vehicles to receive international accolades this year include the rotary powered RX-8 which received Malaysian CIMB Preferred & Getacar’s Best Four Door Coupe for 2009 and the MX-5 roadster, which not only celebrated its 20th birthday but took home the Australian Wheels Gold Star Cars Awards’ Best Sports Roadster under $150,000.
Mazda reveals refined CX-7
16 October 2009
Mazda’s dynamic crossover, the CX-7, is the latest vehicle in Mazda’s line up to receive a second-generation makeover. The vehicle has a perfect blend of SUV practicality with sports car handling and performance.
While the CX-7 retains the existing 2.3L Direct Injection (DISI) turbo engine and 6-speed Activematic configuration of the existing model, the new version features a number of aesthetic enhancements which are sure to turn heads.
“We are excited to introduce the second generation CX-7. Fans of the first generation vehicle will notice we have refined elements of the original model while retaining the balance of SUV practicality and sports car spirit,” says Andrew Clearwater, Managing Director Mazda New Zealand. “The motoring public will notice these nuances as soon as they sit behind the wheel.”
The new CX-7 provides better fuel economy through model-specific measures including revised shift patterns and a reduction in body weight.
The CX-7’s stunning exterior styling links it with other models in the Mazda family. It takes cues from the new generation Mazda3, adopting the aggressive five point grille and bumper design. This is complemented with a restyled side intake containing newly-designed fog lamps. Also new are the front and rear cylindrical lamp designs and 19-inch alloy wheels which come with lower-profile 235/55 R19 tyres. Other changes to the rear of the vehicle include a roof spoiler with integrated high-mount brake lights.
The cabin of the CX-7 embodies refinement. Particularly notable are the higher quality grains and decorative parts, the incorporation of a new meter design and door trim armrests which incorporate soft pads for a more pleasing tactile quality.
Driver comfort has been optimised with the addition of telescopic steering wheel adjustment to complement the existing tilt adjustment. The driver’s seat is also equipped with three position seat memory as well as eight-way power adjustment.
An auxiliary audio point for connecting portable MP3 players will be a welcome addition for Kiwis going on long road trips this summer and comes standard across all models.
Other standard features carried over from the previous model include leather trim, power windows, heated power mirrors, heated front seats and climate controlled air-conditioning, steering wheel-mounted audio and cruise control, MP3 compatible six-disc CD player with a nine speaker 240-watt BOSE® sound system and remote central locking with dual stage unlock.
Like the new Mazda3, the CX-7 adopts the new top-mounted Multi Information Display (MID) which provides the driver with a range of information on audio, fuel consumption, safety alerts and even maintenance reminders.
For added safety, the Multi Information Display also incorporates the monitor for the car’s reversing camera. The camera and rear view monitor display is activated when the shift lever is moved to the ‘Reverse’ position, with the ignition switch in the ON position. As soon as the transmission is moved out of ‘Reverse’ the screen returns to the previous display.
The CX-7’s active safety package includes six airbags (dual front, front side and head protecting front and rear curtain airbags), Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) as well as traction control, ABS anti-lock brakes with Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD) and Emergency Brake Assist (EBA).
The Active Torque Split All-Wheel Drive (AWD) computer controlled system constantly monitors the wheel speed and engine data to optimise grip according to the driving conditions and adjusts the torque distribution from 100:0 to 50:50 front to rear as required.
Like all Mazda passenger cars, every new Mazda CX-7 comes with mazdacare genuine servicing for the first three years or 100,000kms (whichever occurs first).
The CX-7 priced at $47,595 is available in Copper Red Mica, Crystal White Pearl, Galaxy Grey Mica and three new options of Stormy Blue Mica, Sparkling Black Mica and Aluminium Metallic. Visit www.mazda.co.nz for a full list of specifications details.
Ford Fiesta is NZ Car of the Year
Monday, January 11, 2010
The latest Ford Fiesta has been judged New Zealand’s Car of the Year by the country’s leading motoring writers and commentators.
Breaking new ground as the first small Ford to be offered in all major markets around the world, the new Fiesta was launched internationally in late-2008, and has been available here since early-2009.
In reaching their decision to award the Fiesta the country’s top automotive accolade, members of the New Zealand Motoring Writers' Guild assessed both the manual and automatic transmissions of the five-door machine.
As well as performance and handling, the facets under consideration included suitability for the task for which the Fiesta is designed, its value for money, ease of operation, economy, along with its level of home comforts, quality of finish, safety accoutrements and visual appeal.
“The areas in which the Fiesta makes its strongest impression are surely its stand-out styling and superb handling dynamics and refinement,” said Guild president John Oxley.
That said, the Fiesta’s qualities run deep in many other areas as well: Its equipment list, for example, includes features that many will be surprised to find as standard in this class such as voice-controlled Bluetooth phone connectivity, USB and 3.5mm auxiliary audio inputs, steering wheel-mounted audio system controls, cruise control and a security alarm system.
Its safety credentials are also impressive for the supermini class, including dual front and side airbags plus a knee-bag for the driver and electronic stability programming. It holds the maximum 5-star occupant protection rating from the European NCAP crash testing.
All these aspects of the Fiesta have been considered by the NZ Car of the Year judges, with one of the most important aspects of their assessment being the fact that is conducted by experiencing the car in a broad range of local conditions.
“A major point of difference with this award is that it embodies the opinions of professionals in their field from across the country, each of whom has assessed the car on roads in their own region,” Oxley said.
“The car that comes out winner must, as the Fiesta so clearly does, excel from many different perspectives, and in a range of Kiwi-specific conditions.”
The Fiesta was one of a dozen finalists for this year’s New Zealand Car of the Year award, which is open to new models launched in New Zealand during the 12 months prior to November 1 2009. The others, in alphabetical order, were the Alfa Romeo MiTo, Audi Q5, BMW 7-series, Kia Soul, Mercedes-Benz E-Class, Mazda3, Nissan Qashqai, Subaru Legacy/Outback, Volkswagen Golf, Volkswagen Scirocco and Volvo XC60.
Recent past winners of the title, which is now in its 22nd year, have been the Ford Falcon (2008), Mazda 2 (2007) and Porsche Cayman (2006).
In recognition of the Fiesta’s title win, Ford New Zealand will be awarded the Peter Greenslade Trophy, named after the now deceased motoring editor of The Press in Christchurch, who was one of the instigators of the Car of the Year award in the late 1980s.
